Baseball: South Korea the surprise package

Updated: 2008-08-20 08:34 Before the Beijing Games, Cuba, Japan and the US were considered the favorites for the three medals in baseball. Now South Korea has emerged a medal threat. It beat Cuba 7-4 yesterday to remain the only unbeaten side in the competiton. After Cuba took an early lead, Ko Young-min hit a tying two-run single in the fourth. A costly two-run error in the same inning then gave South Korea what proved to be a decisive lead. In other matches yesterday, Canada beat the Netherlands 4-0; Japan beat China 10-0 and the US beat Chinese Taipei 4-2. The seven-round preliminary tournament gets over tonight.
