China to compete in 4 more Olympic events

The General Administration of Sport will hold a media briefing in Beijing on Monday to introduce the four new competitions in which China will participate at the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games. The country will join the bicycle BMX freestyle discipline (which was added to the existing BMX category) and participate in three of the newly added Olympic sports - skateboarding, sports climbing and surfing.

National Fitness Day brings renewed health awareness

Tuesday will mark National Fitness Day to promote enthusiasm for fitness programs. The State Council, China's Cabinet, approved a five-year National Fitness Program last year. Under the plan, the number of people who exercise regularly is expected to reach 435 million. In addition, the total scale of sports-related consumer spending will reach a cumulative 1.5 trillion yuan ($223 billion) by 2020.

Schoolteachers to get basketball training

NBA China and the Ministry of Education will organize Train the Trainer basketball coaching seminars and clinics for physical education teachers on Monday. It is the latest move to improve the game at schools, especially in rural areas. The two signed an agreement in October 2014 aimed at growing the game at the grassroots level.

Rock 'n' Roll Marathon coming to Chengdu

Chengdu, Sichuan province, will be the first city in Asia to host the Rock'n' Roll Marathon. It's scheduled for Oct 28. Registration for the event will begin on Tuesday. Sponsored by United Airlines, the marathon has been held in 30 cities worldwide, attracting more than 600,000 runners every year since its debut in 1998.
