Senior political adviser dismissed

Liu Shanqiao, vice-chairman of the Hubei Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, has been dismissed for severe disciplinary violations, according to the Organization Department of the Communist Party of China Central Committee. Liu, 60, a native of Suizhou, was elected to his current position in 2013. He was placed under investigation by the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, the country's top anti-graft watchdog, in June. Liu worked as mayor and Party chief in several cities in the province from 1994 to 2012.

Jilin

Report: Ex-official violated discipline

Zhou Huachen, former vice-chairman of the Jilin provincial legislature, was involved in severe violations of discipline and laws, Jilin Daily reported on Tuesday. The case was publicized at a conference for Standing Committee members of the Jilin Committee of the Communist Party of China on Monday, according to the report. No other details was released. Zhou, 65, held the position from 2011 to January last year.

37 million college students enrolled

The Ministry of Education said on Tuesday that the country had 37 million students enrolled in 2,880 higher education institutions last year. Although the number was only about 1.4 percent higher than in 2015, it represented a nearly 20 percent leap from 2010, when about 31 million students were enrolled.

Suspect arrested in child killings

A suspect has been arrested and accused of raping and killing children and teenagers, police said. Yao Changfeng was caught on Saturday while attempting to rape an 11-year-old girl in Yuanling county, they said. By comparing his picture with images in a database, they said they discovered he was suspected of killing two children in 2011, and a 15-year-old girl in 2013. Police said they believe that between 2013 and 2017, Yao raped 10 people, three of whom were minors. Yao also confessed to 42 thefts involving more than 17,000 yuan ($2,500), they said.
