Guard forestalls romantic gesture

A student at the Henan University of Engineering who bought 99 watermelons in an attempt to win back his ex-girlfriend was thwarted by a campus security guard. The student, who had hired a van to transport the produce, drew a large crowd of onlookers when he began unloading it at about 9.30 pm on June 19. But before he could show his ex the display of melons, a guard arrived to disperse the crowd, who took the fruit with them. The number 99 is often considered to be auspicious for couples in China, because the Mandarin word for "nine" sounds the same as the word for "longevity" and two nines together are representative of a long marriage.
