Stolen items used to fund gambling

Three suspected burglars, accused of committing 197 crimes in two months, were detained in Luoping county on June 21. The trio, surnamed Zhao, Tian and Wang, allegedly ransacked their victims' homes, even stealing items such as toothpaste and cigarettes. It is estimated that more than 150,000 yuan ($22,100) worth of items were stolen, with most of the money made from selling the items having been spent on gambling.

Customer accuses locksmith of assault

A 60-year-old locksmith, surnamed Ye, was detained on suspicion of sexually assaulting a young woman in Tianchang on June 15. Police said Ye helped his victim, who lives alone, to open her door earlier that day after she had forgotten her keys. The victim claims she woke up to find Ye on her bed sexually assaulting her. Ye fled, but he was detained at his home the next day after police launched an investigation.

Unreformed father in trouble again

A man in Dandong who is accused of stealing his daughter-in-law's necklace was detained recently after his son sought police help. The father, Zhang Shan, has served eight years and five months jail time since 2001. He sold the necklace for 4,900 yuan ($720) to buy drugs, according to police.

Man inserts needles into penis

A 35-year-old man in Shenyang had to undergo surgery after inserting 15 sewing needles into his urethra. The unmarried man, who has not been named, began inserting the needles more than a year ago, but only recently felt any discomfort. He sought medical help after experiencing acute pain and finding blood in his urine. The needles varied in length from 5 to 10 centimeters.

Truck driver picks up passenger

A man who used a ride-hailing app to arrange transportation to Wushan was surprised when he was picked up by an 18-wheeler instead of a car. The man, who shared his experience afterward on his micro blog, said he was scared at first because of the speed the truck traveled at, but was reassured by the driver.

Lamppost falls on moving vehicle

A car was seriously damaged after a lamppost fell on top of it on June 20. The lamppost, which was near a construction site, had been hit several minutes earlier by a cement tanker. The car's driver said he had seen the earlier accident, but decided to carry on regardless because several vehicles in front of him passed the scene safely.

Girl gets head stuck between bars

A 7-year-old girl in Fuzhou whose head got stuck between two railings on a bus on June 24 had to be rescued by firefighters using hydraulic cutters. The girl's head became stuck after the bus driver braked suddenly while driving through the city's Jinan district at about 6 pm. It took the firefighters less than three minutes to free the girl.
