Edinho, whose real name is Edson Cholbi do Nascimento, had avoided serving time while his case underwent a lengthy appeals process.

But on Thursday a judge reaffirmed the conviction, reduced his original 2014 sentence from 33 years to 12 years and 10 months, and ordered Edinho to begin serving time.

The 46-year-old former goalkeeper, who briefly played for his father's former club Santos, spoke to reporters before turning himself in at a police station in the Brazilian port city of Santos.

"I'm frustrated because I'm being massacred by the legal system," Edinho said as he arrived at the station.

Mandzukic keeps Juve on course

Mario Mandzukic inspired Juventus to a 2-0 home win over Empoli on Saturday to edge the Turin giant closer to a record sixth straight Serie A title.

Juve led when Lukasz Skorupski bundled into his own net after a Mandzukic header hit the bar.

Alex Sandro secured the win in the 65th minute as Juve went 10 points clear of nearest rival Roma.

Third-place Napoli is 12 points off the pace after a 2-0 loss at home to Atalanta.

Juventus is also going for a third straight domestic double, so rested several players for the first leg of its Italian Cup semifinal against Napoli on Tuesday.

New Roma home gets green light

Serie A side Roma can look forward to playing in a new purpose-built stadium after city officials finally gave their backing to an amended project.

Rome mayor Virginia Raggi last year ended the Italian capital's hopes of bidding to host the 2024 Olympics.

But after months of uncertainty over Roma's bid to move away from the Stadio Olimpico home it shares with Lazio and Italy's national rugby team, Raggi gave the Giallorossi the news they were hoping for.

"This administration has reached agreement on an innovative new project," Raggi said on Friday.

In a statement on the club's website, Roma's American president James Pallotta said: "This is an important evening for AS Roma. We look forward to building a stadium that the club, and the city, can showcase to the entire soccer world."

Bayern batters hapless Hamburg

Bayern Munich gave Hamburg another embarrassing thrashing at Allianz Arena in the Bundesliga on Saturday.

Robert Lewandowski scored a hat-trick in an 8-0 rout before coach Carlo Ancelotti took pity on the visitor by substituting the Polish striker, with the host 5-0 up and over half an hour left to play.

Arturo Vidal, David Alaba, Arjen Robben and Kingsley Coman (twice) also found the net for Bayern, which leads Hamburg 45-3 on aggregate over eight straight defeats for the northern team in Munich.

The Bavarians were fortunate to scrape a 1-1 draw at Hertha Berlin in its previous league outing, but they stepped up a level against Hamburg, playing with pace and determination.

"It was a perfect day," Ancelotti said of his 1,000th competitive match as a coach. "I told my players to play a good game for my jubilee, but I didn't expect this.

"(Thomas) Muller was the best player on the pitch, even if he didn't get a goal."
