Raid discovers fake brand water scam

An illegally constructed courtyard in Yamenkou village, Shijingshan district, has been found to be a place where fake brands of drinking water were made.

The discovery came during a joint action by the city administration, police, quality control officials and industrial and commercial bureaus.

Workers at the courtyard admitted that about 1,000 buckets of faked drinking water had been produced and sold for 3 to 4 yuan each since May, Beijing News reported. Brands like Wahaha are among those faked. The plastic buckets, brand sticks and security labels were bought from unnamed sources and no cleaning or sterilizing was done. Officials found a sales account book that recorded all the buyers, who will also be investigated.

Court

Students on trial for brutal slayings

Four students from Beijing Renwen University have gone on trial at Beijing No 1 Intermediate People's Court for murdering a 21-year-old hot-pot restaurant owner, with whom they got into some trouble, and his girlfriend on April 27.

Dou, Bei, Yan and Huang, three aged 20 and one aged 17, bought axes the day before the killing and allegedly went to the residence of Zhang, the restaurant owner, in the early morning and beat him to death. Later they went to a bedroom upstairs and slit Zhang's girlfriend's throat.

Police arrested the four suspects between April 29 and May 1, Qianlong website reported.

Green light for night parking lots

Temporary night parking lots will be added to communities in Chaoyang district built before 1994, according to the district traffic management committee. The monthly charge is only 150 yuan per slot.

Officials say new communities that are short of parking places can also set special areas for night parking as long as they do not affect pedestrians, non-motor vehicles, public transport and firefighting activities, Beijing Evening News reported.

Forum in memory of MBA project

Tsinghua University held a forum on Saturday to commemorate the university's MBA education over the past 20 years. The event also marked the 20th year since China launched the education program at Tsinghua and other eight pilot universities.

Nine universities enrolled 84 MBA students in 1984, but the country has seen rapid growth in its MBA education, with 35,777 students doing the course last year at 236 Chinese universities.

Qian Yingyi, dean of Tsinghua's school of economics and management, said Chinese business schools have begun to share more of the philosophy of MBA education with their foreign counterparts. He called for three major focus points for future programs: leadership, entrepreneurship and experimental learning.

New drivers start with civilized oath

New drivers in Beijing will have to take an oath to drive in a civilized way before they get their licenses and hit the road.

In a move to promote civilized driving, from May 21 new drivers who graduate from Beijing's 100 driving schools must take an oath before they receive their licenses. They must swear to become a polite Beijinger and set an example for green and civilized outings, Beijing Times reported.

Beijing has seen rapid growth in the number of new drivers, with an annual increase of about 600,000. Officials have also included tips on first aid in the written test in an attempt to equip new drivers with information for coping with emergencies on the road.
