Creative thinking mattered the most when top students sat for interviews of the independent enrollment tests of Peking University last week.

About 1,700 students from senior high schools across the country took part in the interviews. Each group of five students was interviewed by three interviewers over 50 minutes, according to Beijing Evening News.

Students selected one question first and had a second chance if they were not sure how to answer it.

For example, participant Cao Yuan gave up her first question on "carbon sink" and took her second chance, which was how to deal with an emergency.

The interview began with a one-minute self-introduction and then a barrage of questions for five minutes. This was followed by a group discussion with other contestants.

Each question has no standard answer, said staff from the admission office at Peking University.

The purpose was to test the interviewees' responses and see whether they had different angles and opinions.

The score was composed of a written test and an interview. The written test was worth 500 points and the interview was 100 points.

Staff with the admission office at Tsinghua University said students didn't need special academic backgrounds to take the interview, because the questions were generally divided into comprehensive knowledge and specialty knowledge.

What they talked about......

What should happen if an emergency occurs but the leaders are absent?

Is it an unalterable principle that good students enjoy good education?

If you were the secretary-general of the United Nations, how would you solve the problem of Somali pirates?

What is a carbon sink?

Some economists believe that the development of science and technology has resulted in job losses. What's your opinion about hiring two people to fill one position?

What's your opinion on whether the household contract responsibility system failed to improve modern agricultural production?

What's your comment on the idea that southerners are effeminate while northerners are straightforward?

What do you think of the saying that if a dog bites a human this is not news, but if a human bites a dog, it is?
