This year's most popular Christmas gifts from Ikea include home furnishings like pillows, blankets, vases and Christmas textiles to make curtains, according to Virginia Ni, PR specialist at Ikea in Beijing.
People buy a lot of candles as gifts. Stuffed animals and other toys for the children are also very popular, she said.
Couples give each other matching bathrobes and friends buy smaller gifts like picture frames or candles with different smells.
Expats buy more traditional Christmas decorations, like Christmas lights or home furnishings with Christmas patterns. They also buy a lot of Christmas food to celebrate the season, like gingerbread cookies and Christmas candy.
Ni said the Chinese people are sometimes curious and might buy some too.
"The biggest difference is that expats start their Christmas shopping two months before Christmas, while Chinese just a few days before Christmas," Ni said.
In addition, Chinese people buy Christmas decorations mostly for the Christmas tree, while expats decorate the rest of their home as well.
