Local Knowledge: Where to get a coat

It can be hard to find clothes in Beijing that fit a Western body, especially during winter when it's simply not enough to put on a T-shirt and a pair of jeans. It's not just the price that makes a difference, which can vary from a couple hundred yuan to a couple of thousand. Quality is also one concern.

But don't judge a book by its cover. You can find basic, cheap clothes in cheap stores and the quality can still be good.

Every store has its own rules and some shops do not refund returned clothes, even if they have the price tag on. So make sure that you ask before purchasing an item.

Here is a list of places where you can find winter clothes:

Wudaokou market

In this market you can find everything from sunglasses to quality jeans. On the second floor, you can find good quality clothes such as sweaters, coats and shirts made of wool. The market follows Korean-style fashion.

Getting there: Take the subway Line 13 to Wudaokou station and take No 959 bus to the market. It's opposite the street of McDonalds.

Zoo wholesale market

The Zoo wholesale market is located near the Beijing Zoo in Xizhimen. It consists of several markets including Tianle, Dongding, Zhonghe, Tianhao, to name a few. Many locals buy their clothes there. Are you looking for quality socks, trousers, plain white T-shirts or regular black tights? This is the place to go, especially if you want to buy a lot, then you often get a good discount.

Getting there: Take subway Line 4 to Beijing Zoo and walk along your right side.

Xidan shopping area

You can find established brands with intermediate price range in many department stores in Xidan. There are also some street stores where you can bargain. Don't miss the underground 77th Street shopping center.

Getting there: Take the subway Line 1 and 4 to Xidan station and get out on Exit A.

China World Trade Center

In Guomao shopping mall, you will find a lot of high-end stores with international brands.

Getting there: Take the subway Line 1 and 10 to Guomao station.
