Southwest China's Yunnan province had a bumper harvest in highland agriculture in 2014, with gross output in farming, animal husbandry and fishery ranking 14th inthe country.
Yunnan government is developing highland agriculture thanks to its abundant natural resources and large plateau. Highland agriculture refers to grains, vegetables, flowers and animal husbandry on the plateau.
According to official statistics, in 2014, more than 4 million hectares of land in Yunnan were covered by grain, and output reached 18 million tons.
In addition, more than 60 minor grain crops were grew across the province, including barley, oats, buckwheat and peas. Annual output of rubber, coffee and flowers ranked first in the country.
Yunnan has developed into a worldwide flower trade center. In 2014 the flower planting area covered 7 hectares with production value worth 38 billion yuan, and gross exports worth $250 million. There are 1,770 enterprises dealing with flower trade, providing 800,000 jobs.
The grassland covers 15 million hectares in Yunnan, and milk powder exports are first in the country.
The exports play an important role in agriculture development. Yunnan products have been exported to more than 110 countries and regions, with value of $2.89 billion.
As for the neighboring market, Yunnan products accounted for 30 percent of Hong Kong's nonlocal vegetables.
