As China's largest coffee producing area, Pu'er city in Yunnan province has been making efforts to strengthen its coffee brand and improve the quality of its coffee production.
Ted Lingle, former executive director of the Speciality Coffee Association of America (SCAA), recently evaluated Yunnan specialty coffee varieties at the Yunnan Gulinfang Coffee Laboratory. He sampled 12 specialty coffee bean samples from Yunnan's main coffee production bases, such as Pu’er, Baoshan and Xishuangbanna. After several rounds of blind coffee cupping, specialty coffee samples from Pu’er were graded highly for their quality and taste.
Lingle expressed high praise for the natural planting conditions of Pu'er. Statistics show coffee production area in Pu'er had reached 50,466 hectares by 2014, producing 39,000 tons of coffee worth 1.2 billion yuan ($194 million).
The quality of coffee, as well as the city's large production area, has helped Pu'er develop into a major coffee trading hub. To further the trade of coffee, Pu'er has helped to promote the development of the coffee industry in surrounding areas in countries such as Myanmar and Laos.
Lingle stressed that the local government must give more support to local coffee growers in both finance and growing technology.
