Indian scholars from the University of Delhi expressed their positivity towards Sino-Indian relations and expressed hope for further cooperation between the two countries in an interview with Yunnan Daily, on June 24.
"China and India have a very promising future," said Janarden Suhu, a professor of the Department of East Asia Studies at Delhi University. He also suggested that the two countries could improve understanding through communication between non-governmental institutions.
Some scholars have suggested that India does not have a thorough understanding of the Belt and Road Initiative. As such, they have called on China to send more scholars to India to explain the initiative or invite Indian scholars to China to attend a symposium. The initiative refers to the Silk Road Economic Belt and the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road that were put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visits to Kazakhstan and Indonesia in 2013. India is a significant country along the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road.
According to some scholars, another way to strengthen Sino-Indian relations is to increase communication between cities in the two countries, such as the twinned cities of Shanghai and Bombay.
An increasing number of Indian scholars and students have been attracted to study in China, as ties between the two countries continue to warm. The number of Chinese studying in India has also increased.
Professor Anita Shazmadu at Delhi University highlighted that more than 10 Indian universities had opened Chinese language courses. "Some middle schools have also started to set up Chinese courses in recent years," added Anita.
