There are nine ethnic minority autonomous counties in the city of Pu'er, and they are home to 14 native ethnic groups such as the Han, Hani, Yi, Lahu, Va and Dai.
Ethnic minorities constitute about 61 percent of the population, and visitors are usually very curious about their culture. The National Unity Oath Monument of Pu'er, the first one that was erected after the establishment of the People’s Republic and the historical Menglian City Hall which reflects the historical culture of the Dai people, are located in the city.
Many popular songs, for example Wedding Vows and Song of the Va, originated in Pu'er. Several traditional ethnic festivals such as the Wooden Drum Festival of the Va, the Calabash Festival of the Lahu, the Torch Festival of the Yi, and the Water Splashing Festival of the Dai date back thousands of years and attract visitors from all over the world. All this probably explains in part why the World Tourism Organization said "Pu’er is a poetic city with romance in the air".
