Locals use ancient methods to pick tea on Jingmai Mountain in Lancang county in Pu’er, in northwest Yunnan province. |
Pu'er is located at the center of the world's tea source area. It is the birthplace of Pu'er tea and is also the starting point of the ancient Tea Horse Road.
Pu'er is the home of the Bigleaf Magnolia whose fossil records date back over 100 million years ago, a 2700-year-old "Wild Tea Tree King" and many 1000-year-old ancient tea trees. The tea plantation area covers about 2.17 million hectares, and includes 90.67 thousand hectares of modern tea plantation, 78.67 thousand hectares of wild ancient tea trees, 12 thousand hectares of ancient tea trees and a tea grove of about 35.33 thousand hectares.
Pu'er tea has a unique taste, and is believed to have special health benefits. It is also valuable for collectors and is considered to be a kind of "drinkable antique". In recent years, the local authorities implemented a plan to promote the scientifically proven benefits of Pu'er Tea.
In addition, the authorites are promoting the benefits of the instant tea 'Deepure', following the breakthrough in the research regarding its benefits. They hope to enable Pu'er tea and its tea culture to act as a sort of business card for the city.
