People are producing wastewater every day, from domestic activities such as cooking and cleaning, to industrial production. What happens to this wastewater and could it be reused?

A water recycling facility developed by Mengniu Milk Industry Xinjiang Tianxue Food Co began operations recently, strengthening its ability to treat sewage.

The treatment facility covers an area of 2,900 square meters, and includes facilities such as an oxygen pool, a secondary sedimentation tank and a clear water tank.

The sewage water discharged into the treatment facility will be processed and made useable again. According to the company’s representatives, the processed water will be used to meet various irrigation needs.

In the past, 30,000 cubic meters of water was needed for irrigation annually, costing the company some 70,000 yuan ($10,400). The treated water now is expected to be able to irrigate an area of around 20,000 square meters.

Chen Xiaojun, who is responsible for the water treatment project, said that the Tianxue company has decided to use the treated water for irrigation in Toutunhe Zone in the future.

As of now, 11 companies in the zone have set up water treatment facilities to increase water efficiency. In 2015, the volume of water discharged by these companies was 1.5 million cubic meters, and the average volume of water they were able to treat was 10,000 cubic meters per day.
