Northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region reported 27.88 million tonnes of crude oil output last year, 12.8 percent of China's total.

The figures were based mainly on reports from Xinjiang's four major oilfields, the Karamay, Tarim, Tuha and Tahe.

The government said the region's crude output was 820,000 tonnes more than in 2014.

The output is expected to hit 29 million tonnes by 2020, when its natural gas output should reach 36 billion cubic meters.

The region has an estimated 22.8 billion tonnes of petroleum reserves, 22 percent of China's total.

China accelerated the tapping of Xinjiang's oil and gas resources from the 1990s, when the region's crude oil output accounted for just 5 percent of the country's total.
