The Silk Road Economic Belt is part of the Belt and Road Initiative which was put forward by Chinese President Xi Jinping during his visits to Kazakhstan and Indonesia in 2013. The belt is an ancient trade route reaching from China through to Central Asia and Europe.

Located in the northwestern part of China, the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region is a connection bridge between Eastern China and other Asian countries.

In line with the region’s special status as a key area along the Silk Road Economic Belt, Urumqi is taking efforts to develop an open economy by building itself into hubs of transportation, logistics, trading, culture, technology and medical services.

To support the city’s development, the Urumqi State High-tech Industrial Zone has formed an industrial cultivation system which integrates the functions of technology development and transformation and enterprise incubation.

The zone has six major industries of new energy, new material, biomedicine, equipment manufacturing, fine chemicals and modern services.
