Chinese New Year, also known as China's Spring Festival, is the most important annual festival in the country. In 2017, the first day of the Chinese New Year was on Saturday, Jan 28, and marked the beginning of the Year of the Rooster.
In China, there are diverse regional customs and traditions to celebrate Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year's Day is an occasion for families to gather for an annual dinner, and enjoy the Spring Festival Gala. Every family always cleans the house, in order to sweep away ill-fortune and welcome incoming luck; furniture is also decorated with red paper-cuts and couplets themed for happiness.
