Tianjin auto manufacturing base becomes national new industrialization industry demonstration base

The auto industry demonstration base of Tianjin Economic-Technological Development Area (TEDA) was selected as one of the first group of new industrialization industry demonstration bases in 2009. After years of development, the base has already developed into an automobile cluster with enterprises of multi-nations, series and types represented by Toyota, Volkswagen and Great Wall Motor.

The base now has five auto manufacturing enterprises, including FAW Toyota Co, FAW Volkswagen Co and Great Wall Motor. Its output of auto in 2015 was 996,000, including cars, SUVs, special vehicles and new energy vehicles. Moreover, the base has over 140 supporting enterprises that can supply supporting products and services for Chinese, Japanese, South Korean, European and American auto brands, over a half of these enterprises are first-level suppliers. During the 12th Five-Year Plan period (20112015), TEDA’s auto output grew from 482,000 to 996,000, while the output value increased to 154.89 billion CNY from 103.47 billion CNY. In addition to manufacturing of whole vehicles and spare parts, TEDA has already developed a full-range industrial chain from processing, manufacturing to R&D and marketing.

TEDA has three national enterprise technological centers and 14 ones at municipal level, and forms R&D system covering every procedure of auto industrial chain. Moreover, it has achieved several breakthroughs in respect of vehicle electronic navigation products, electronic vehicle control and dynamic system of hybrid vehicles.

In terms of upstream materials and equipment, TEDA has enterprises covering different processes, such as steel, alloys, tires, coating and exhaust purification catalyst.

Auto finance represented by Tianjin Great Wall Binyin Automotive Finance Co Ltd, auto logistics represented by Tongfang Global (Tianjin) Logistics Co Ltd and auto exhibition brands such as the International Forum (TEDA) on Chinese Automotive Industry Development have formed TEDA’s auto downstream service chain.

TEDA will follow auto industry development trend in the 13th Five-Year Plan, prioritizing innovation-driven development, quality and efficiency improvements. Focusing on intelligent manufacturing, it strives to push the auto industrial chain’s extension in different dimensions by relying on the leading enterprises such as FAW Toyota Motor, FAW Volkswagen Motor and Great Wall Motor, in order to achieve coordinated development of spare parts and whole vehicles, as well as integration of R&D, manufacturing with expanded services. Meanwhile, it strives to be a national auto industry base with growing comprehensive strength and potential by using the opportunities brought by new-energy vehicles and “Internet Plus” auto.

Tianjin FAW Toyota Motor Co’s Xinyi assembly line laid a foundation in TEDA on March 25, 2016. With new added investment of 5.4 billion CNY, the assembly project covers an area of 570,000 square meters, and building area of 236,000 square meters. Its annual output is estimated to be 200,000. With the establishment of the Xinyi assembly line and the FAW Volkswagen’s North China base, the city’s auto industry will have a boost in TEDA during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-2020). The annual output of finished auto is expected to be 2 million with output value hitting 300 billion CNY.
