Universities and colleges
Tianjin is known for its modern higher education. It is home to China’s first modern university- Peiyang University (now called Tianjin University) and China’s first private university- Nankai University. The first premier of the People’s Republic of China, Zhou Enlai, was a student at Nankai University. There are now 55 colleges and universities, 690 high schools and 983 primary schools in Tianjin. The average educational level for Tianjin citizens has reached 15 years.
Nankai University
Nankai University was founded in 1919 by the famous patriotic educators, Mr. Zhang Boling and Mr. Yan Xiu. It is considered to be one of the most comprehensive universities with the largest number of disciplines. It features a balance between the Humanities and the Sciences, a solid foundation and a combination of application and creativity. Nankai University has a fully fledged education system for producing undergraduates, postgraduates on master's and doctoral programs and post-doctoral researchers. The College of Chinese Language and Culture embodies a national teaching base for TCFL.International students can learn a lot about Chinese culture here such as calligraphy, painting, Peking Opera, folk songs, martial arts, Tai Chi, and Chinese cooking. It is also the only sponsor of HSK (The Chinese Proficiency Test) at basic, elementary-intermediate, and advanced level in Tianjin.

Tianjin University
The first university to be established in China was Tianjin University. Founded in 1895 as Peiyang University, Tianjin University has grown into a National Key University directly under the administration of the Ministry of Education of China. It offers many disciplines including science, liberal arts, business, and law with a special emphasis on engineering. Tianjin University is an active promoter of international communication and cooperation. It has signed cooperative agreements with 120 universities and colleges overseas, and with more than 20 renowned multinational enterprises. The Confucius Institute in Bratislava and Confucius Institute at the University of Queensland in Australia were set up by Tianjin University.

Tianjin Medical University
Founded in 1951, it is the first higher medical university after the founding of new China. It has established cooperative relationships 58 universities from 16 countries. Along with four other universities including Beijing University, it has been chosen as a member of the educational expert group for international students majoring in western medicine in China by the Ministry of Education of PRC. The number of international students pursuing degrees at Tianjin Medical University has topped other western medical colleges in China.

Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine
Established in 1958, Tianjin University of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TUTCM) was one of the earliest universities of TCM in China. It is divided into four areas of study: Medical, Science, Arts and Management. The University offers 18 PhD programs, 27 masters programs, 16 undergraduate programs and one post-doctoral fellowship. The Acupuncture & Moxibustion Science is a state-level key program. Each year, there are over 1000 foreign students from 20 countries that study at the university.

Tianjin Foreign Studies University
Tianjin Foreign Studies University (TFSU) was founded in 1964. As one of the eight such universities in China, it offers a number of language and cultural programs to Chinese and overseas students of various educational backgrounds. The university offers 30 programs in over 20 specialties, namely, English, Japanese, Korean, German, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese Language and Culture, Journalism, World Economy and Trade, Law, Finance, Educational Technology, and Information Management and Information Systems.
It has established partnerships with 70 universities or education organizations from 18 countries. Confucius institutes have been set up between TFSU and Soonchunhyang University in Korea and Volgograd State Pedagogical University in Russia. It is also participating educational training programs like Goethe Language Center, ESEC.
