China's super computer Nebulae will become fully operational in the National Supercomputing Center in Shenzhen next month, according to Dawning Information Industry Co.

The Dawning Nebulae, which was developed and produced at the Dawning Tianjin Industrial Base, was officially released in June last year, with the measured Linpack performance of 1.27 petaflops per second.

The Dawning Nebulae holds the No. 2 spot on the 35th edition of the closely watched top 500 list of supercomputers in the world, which was published May 31, 2010.

In part due to its NVidia GPU accelerators, Nebulae reports an impressive theoretical peak capability of almost 3 petaflop/s — the highest yet on the top 500 list.

The functions of the Nebulae will be divided into two: high-speed calculations and cloud calculations, according to Nie Hua, vice president of Dawning Information Industry Co.

The supercomputing center in Shenzhen was now making final preparations after completing electricity supply to the computer and a large number of clients were waiting to use the super computer, Nie said.

Costing 1.23 billion yuan ($189 million), the National Super Computing Center in Shenzhen is the largest national technological infrastructure in the city.
