Chinese cities to participate car-free day
2009-09-04

September 22 is World Car Free Day. Over a hundred Chinese cities, including Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin have promised to participate.

The Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Construction has said from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on September 22nd, certain areas of a city or the entire city will be car-free zones. Only pedestrians, bicycles, taxis and public transport will be allowed. The car-free zone must be no less than five square kilometers. And a city will choose at least one street as the model street for bicycles and pedestrians only.

By the end of June, China had more than 170 million automobiles. The country initiated the car-free day in September 2007, with 110 cities taking part.
