Protection or destruction?
2009-05-23

Wudadao, an eminent historic block with European style architecture located in Tianjin, is in danger. In the name of protection and redevelopment, rampant demolition threatens the integrity and value of the architectural treasure, says the Southern Weekend. Excerpt:

Wudadao is situated in the former British concession of Tianjin, rekindling memories of classical European architecture.

It is a very precious cultural heritage not just for Tianjin but the whole country. However, the block is now staring at demolition and destruction. Many elegant European-style old houses will be demolished to make way for a shopping and entertainment center.

Although the redevelopment project in Wudadao comes under the banner of "protection" and a few houses will be not demolished, the integrity of the historic block is at stake.

If only a few ancient structures remain in Wudadao, it would be as if its face is preserved after its arms and legs are chopped off. No matter how pretty its face, the area will be rendered disabled. Its glamour will become history.

The demolition goes against the 2008 State regulations on protecting historic cultural heritages.

It's apparent that the Wudadao demolition drive violates the regulations and defies the authority of the law and the central government.

It is imperative now to conform to the regulations, stop destructing beauty, and preserve the historic block. Else, we'll be organizing the funeral of another national treasure.
