The association was established in 1981 by joint forces from Chinese universities prominent in the Russian discipline including Beijing Foreign Studies University, Heilongjiang University, Peking University, and Beijing Normal University. It was created as a platform to group Russian language researchers and professionals together and boost domestic and overseas academic exchanges in the area, as well as increase the country’s socialist modernization.

An important issue of the conference was to announce winners of the lifetime achievement award in Russian studies and the award for outstanding performance in the Russian discipline. A total of 25 scholars from China’s higher education institutions including Peking University, Shanghai International Studies University, Nanjing University, and Shanxi University were honored.
