This school is one of the university's most advanced, with a Management and Decision-making Research Center that is a key unit for the humanities and social sciences in Shanxi province, and has the following: a post-doctoral research area for management science and engineering majors; a Level-1 doctoral program in management science and engineering; a key provincial management science and engineering major; a key provincial research area for the humanities and social sciences for management and decision-making research; Level-1 master’s degree programs in theoretical economics, management science and engineering, project management, and library and information sciences and archives management; Level-2 master degree programs in industrial economics and quantitative economics; master’s degree programs for an MBA, logistics engineering, project management, industry, library and information sciences, and engineering management; provincial postgrad education at the Shanxi Fenjiu Engineering Postgraduate Education Innovation Center and Shanxi Energy Economics Postgraduate Education Innovation Center; and a postgraduate education innovation center at the Source-driven Local Business Transformation Postgraduate Education Innovation Base.
It has undergraduate majors in business management, economics, international trade, finance, accounting, e-commerce, information management and engineering, and software engineering, and an education training base for e-commerce. The school is a driver of the university's Comprehensive Competent Improvement Project for Resource-driven Economic Transformation and Development Research, with the following: laboratories for economics, business management, international trade, finance, accounting, information management, e-commerce and software engineering; the university's Information Management Research Institute, its Central China Development Research Center, its Resource-driven Economic Transformation and Development Research Centre, its Industrial Economic Research Institute, its Investment Research Centre, and its Strategy Management Research Centre in conjunction with the Shanxi Coal International Energy Co.
It has 104 faculty members, with 16 professors and 31 associate professors, as well as six doctoral supervisors, and 25 postgraduate supervisors. It has two teachers who get special State Council funds, one with Education Ministry funding, one with a Shanxi university Outstanding Innovative Faculty award, one with a Shanxi Young Scientist Project award, seven with Shanxi Young Academic lead Researcher titles, and two members of the Shanxi 100 Talented People Program. Its professors, such as Liu Weiqi, Li Changhong, Liang Jiye, Li Jingfeng, Zhang Xingdong, Rong Heping, Fei Chengfa, Shi Tao, Mei Jianjun and Gao Xiangyi make up a powerful team of academic researchers.
Majors are developed to suit economic and social needs and the school trains talented people in bachelor's, master's and PhD programs with increased interaction between academic research and teaching, and currently has 2,000 students. In recent years, the faculty have achieved a lot in research in finance engineering and risk management, logistics and supply chains, management theory and methodology, finance management and accounting, information management, business administration, theoretical economics, and industrial economics and have published more than 800 papers in prominent academic journals in China and oversea and more than 60 books. They have received at least 30 awards from local and national authorities, including a China International Exhibition of Invention Gold Award, Shanxi Science and Technology Award, and Shanxi Outstanding Social Science Research award, and have completed at least 20 National Natural Science Foundation, National Social Science Foundation, China Post-doctor Science Foundation, Education Ministry Humanities and Social Science Research projects, as well as 863 Projects, and at least 80 provincial research projects and 80 decision-making reports for business.
The school emphasizes academic communications and has connections with many universities, including the US's University of Idaho, the University College of Cape Breton, Australia's University of Technology Sydney, Russia's St. Petersburg State University, Japan's Rikkyo University and Yokohama National University, and China’s Peking University and Xi'an Jiaotong University.
