Tourism booms in Pingyao during Spring Festival

More than 312,000 tourists visited Pingyao during the Spring Festival holiday, which took place from Jan 27 to Feb 2, representing year-on-year growth of 18 percent.
Preferential policies on transportation such as toll-free highways encouraged more people to visit Pingyao for sightseeing. The local high-speed railway station received 28,211 passengers during the seven-day holiday, with the daily volume of passengers hitting 4,000 on average. The number of visitors to the ancient city stayed among the top five in tourist volume of 37 major tourist attractions of Shanxi during the holiday.
The tourist season gave Pingyao a chance to promote its culture and tourism attractions, as well as boost consumption. The 2017 Pingyao Chinese New Year, one of the annual cultural events in the county, consisted of seven themed activities, including opera and celebrations of folk customs, showcasing Pingyao's traditional celebration of Spring Festival in North China to visiting travelers.
Twenty-two shows of Another Glance at Pingyao, a combination of performance art and theater showing scenes from Pingyao's history, attracted 22,300 spectators and earned 3.84 million yuan ($558,295). The performance earnings represented year-on-year growth of 26.25 percent.
Pingyao Wantuo
Wantuo, a type of noodle from the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), is one of Pingyao's local snacks with a long history.
