Four experts from a review panel of the National Geological Park Evaluation Committee arrived in Datong and carried out scientific research on the construction progress of the national volcano geological park on July 25, 2012.

The city government met with the experts, led by researcher Chen Anze, general engineer of the National Geological Park Research Center. Deputy Mayor Jin Ruilin was also present and gave a pep talk to the people involved.

The Datong volcano group is a famous volcano distribution area dating back 14,800 years. Geologists have investigated the area several times. In July 2009, the Ministry of Land and Resources dubbed it as the Datong Volcano Group National Geology Park.

These geological relics are valuable in terms of ecology, archaeology, history and culture. Chen said that the Datong volcano group has great aesthetic value and scientific value. The establishment of the park has three objectives: to preserve geological relics and the natural environment, to impart scientific knowledge and to develop tourism.
