Dong Dong, a graduate of Datong Sports School, claimed Olympic gold in the men's Individual Trampoline event at the North Greenwich Arena with a breathtaking sky-high routine on the evening of August 3. It is the first gold medal won by an athlete from Datong, Shanxi province.
The 2008 bronze medalist outshone teammate and defending Olympic champion Lu Chunlong to score 62.990. Russia's Dmitry Ushakov finished with a silver medal, with Lu taking bronze.
The Datong municipal committee and city government sent congratulatory messages to Dong, his coach, Cai Guangliang, and the Datong sports bureau. They praised their great efforts and achievement in winning a significant gold medal for the Chinese Olympic team.
There were eight competitors in the final round, in which only a set of optional exercise was required. Lu Chunlong was in second place when Ushakov finished his routine. Dong was the last to perform and won first place with an overwhelming high score of 62.990.
Dong's victory helped him realize a grand slam title, as he is the winner of the Olympic Games, World Championships and the Asian Games.
