Folk art to lure visitors to Yungang Grottoes

update: 2012-04-01

Datong has introduced local folk arts to its cultural and commercial street to boost Yungang Grottoes tourism.

The local government is promoting Lingqiu silverware, Kang’s silk figurines, Yungang shadow puppets and Guangling paper cuts.

Cross-stitch kits and patterns of Buddha statues from the grottoes are under production, according to the Research Institute of Yungang Grottoes.

The scenic spot is passing on its traditional handicrafts that are in danger of extinction by transforming these artworks into competitive commodities, said a head of the Research Institute.

Preferential policies would support traditional handicraft enterprises to enhance the charm of Yungang Grottoes along with the city. Officials plan to stage traditional local operas, while collecting folk tales to put on display for tourists.
