An international sculpture exhibition will kick off on Sept 28 in Datong, Shanxi province, the first of its kind nationwide.
The event, jointly held by the China Artists Association, the China Central Academy of Fine Arts and the local government, will present 330 exquisite masterpieces made by 88 outstanding sculpturers from nine countries.
The event is themed “Enlightenment” and aims to realize the interaction between modern sculptures and traditional cultures. A group of relevant forums and activities will also be held during the exhibition.
A forum themed “Rebuild the tradition” will allow experts and scholars to discuss the city’s culture and spirits by analyzing the sculptural history of Datong.
A show of sculptures made by students who won the Zeng Zhushao scholarship will reflect the achievement of education in sculpture art this year. A hundred works will be on the show.
As one of the 24 Chinese historic and cultural cities, Datong has profound cultural deposits and rich ancient relics. The sculptures of Buddha in the Yungang Grottoes and the Shanhua Temple are all considered great masterpieces and rare treasures. Therefore, Datong is worthy of the title- home of Chinese sculpture art.
