Liu Jinping (second from right) teaches new employees how to knit handicrafts at Qiaonianggong Hand Knitting Cooperative in Guangling county, Shanxi province, Sept 10. Based on agricultural and ecological resources in the county, most of the handicrafts are made of plants like corn leaves and bulrush. With the support of local government, the cooperative has attracted women from nearby villages, with the aim of helping increase their incomes. There are now 840 employees in the cooperative with more than 640 of the women coming from deprived backgrounds. The cooperative’s sales volume exceeded 1 million yuan ($152,792) in 2016.
