The InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland, or Tianma Pit Hotel, in Sheshan Resort, was called a "new national landscape" in a show produced by China Central Television (CCTV), local media reported on Nov 2.
The hotel stretches 88 meters underground and was listed as one of the architectural wonders of the world in National Geographic Channel's Mega Structures series due to its pioneering design.
The hotel, located beside Tianma Pit in the Sheshan Mountain Range in southwestern Shanghai, was designed by British architect Martin Jochman and built into the side wall of an abandoned quarry, with most of the structure located underground.
The entire construction process was filmed for the Mega Structures TV series, which was broadcast in more than 200 countries and regions.

There is a lake at the bottom of the quarry, and unlike most hotels, the most luxurious suite as well as an aquatic-themed restaurant are located on the two lowest floors underwater.
There is also a sightseeing platform on the opposite side of a 60-meter waterfall, giving visitors a view of the entire structure.
For the underwater suites, a landing deck at water level houses an outdoor terrace and bedroom, while the living rooms are underwater, encased within a turquoise aquarium with schools of fish swimming by.
Designed with modern elegance which accentuates the unique features of the original quarry landscape, all 336 rooms and suites provide spacious, luxurious living rooms with spectacular views of the hotel's signature waterfalls and surrounding cliffs.
All hotel rooms on the bottom floor receive around-the-clock room service to ensure a pleasant experience.
In addition, the hotel is adjacent to other popular scenic spots in Sheshan Resort, such as Sheshan National Forest Park, Chenshan Botanical Garden, and Guangfulin Cultural Relics Park.
