An index of the innovative strength of China's automobile industry was recently released for the third consecutive year in Anting, an automobile hub in Jiading district, Shanghai.
The index listed seven innovative trends which occurred in China's automobile industry in 2019, including an increasing emphasis on both qualitative and quantitative innovations, more market-based sustainable innovations by companies, and more diverse innovations by independent and joint venture companies.
According to the index, independent companies gained significant momentum and have begun to close the gap with joint ventures, excelling in areas such as new energy and intelligent vehicles.
Zhang Jianming, vice director at the Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, said the index is widely acknowledged by auto companies and has encouraged them to gear up for further innovation and transformation.
"Shanghai is spearheading China's auto industry development and aims to grow into an international leader. Jiading has reached a total output value of 440 billion yuan ($63 billion), accounting for two thirds of the city's total," Zhang said.
"Jiading has attracted and cultivated a number of cutting-edge new energy and smart car companies. The district is determined to stand at the technological forefront and lay a solid foundation for the further development of Shanghai's automobile industry."
