The annual Shanghai Confucius Cultural Festival is set to take place in Shanghai's Jiading district on Sept 7-28.
First hosted in 2008, the festival is celebrating its 11th anniversary this year. It has since become an event to display the profound traditional culture of Jiading and how the district has modernized, and to provide traditional Chinese cultural experiences for the local residents and tourists alike.
A total of 15 traditional Chinese culture-themed activities will take place. Here is a rundown of some of the featured activities.
Coming-of-age ceremony
The coming-of-age ceremony is a ceremony which symbolizes young boys and girls growing up as adults. In ancient China, boys of 20 years old will be considered as grown-ups while girls of 15 years old will be seen as adults. In modern China, both boys and girls become adults when they are 18 years old.
