Students from Yingyuan Middle School in Shanghai's Jiading district, won three gold and two silver medals at the 2017 Japan Design & Invention Expo in Tokyo on Aug 4-6.
Jiading's young inventors stood out among more than 2,000 projects from over 20 countries and regions at this year's expo.
Li Han won a gold medal and a special Young Inventor Award, which also netted him a $109 prize, for his thermal keyboard cover design.
Wang Zirong also bagged a medal for a device to stop vehicles slipping on highways, while Liang Siyuan was recognized for an innovative automatic dog feeder.
Zhang Jianlu was awarded for a bathroom drainpipe cleaner prototype, and Gong Xi received an award for a portable LED caution light invention.
Aside from the awards, the Jiading students also had the chance to exchange ideas with young talents from Japan, Indonesia, the United States, Poland, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, and several other countries and regions.
Yingyuan Middle School focuses on STEM education, short for science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, and aims to nurture and improve students' ability to innovate.
To achieve its goal, the school sets up related courses, encourages students to build innovation-oriented clubs, brings in quality education resources, and organizes creativity and design competitions.
