About 500 students from the primary school affiliated with Shanghai's Jiading No 1 High School attended a special opening ceremony at the R&D center of Volvo Cars China on Feb 16.
Upon arrival, the students were taken on a tour around the working areas of the R&D center. Next, auto engineers gave lectures on auto technology and provided information about security. The lecturers used a variety of cartoon characters, such as Lightning McQueen from the Pixar's Cars, to cater to the tastes and interests of the children.

Shen Feng, vice president for R&D at Volvo Cars China, said he hoped he could work with the kids someday on automobile R&D. He also shared his dream of one day developing a flying car.
Shen also believes in the benefits of inviting young children to visit the center. He feels it can prove an inspiring experience for young minds to have a close-up look at the workings of the auto industry. He suggested that for some students it may help them to work harder in school.
He Lan, head of the primary school, said that this unconventional opening ceremony would hopefully enlighten and engage the kids, bringing them closer to science and technology.
