A group of experts in intangible cultural heritages paid a visit to Xuhang town of Jiading district, Shanghai on July 8, to gain a better understanding of current developments in Xuhang straw weaving and help it advance.
Xuhang straw weaving, a traditional technique of producing straw products such as hats and bags by braiding, was listed as a national intangible heritage in 2008.
The experts admired exquisite straw weaving products at the straw products exhibition center in Xuhang Primary School and two local straw weaving organizations, and spoke highly of the school's efforts to introducing intangible cultural heritage preservation into its curriculum.

They also attended a symposium where Xuhang leaders reported on the problems facing the cultural heritage, including a shortage of inheritors and insufficient manufacturing innovation.
The experts suggested changing the manufacturing pattern, applying for special support funds, building a straw weaving base to increase its exposure, strengthening training of its inheritors, and enhancing communications with leading designers or design companies to develop quality products.
