The New York Philharmonic staged a symphony concert at the Poly Grand Theater in Shanghai's Jiading district on July 4, giving local residents a music feast, local media reported.

Founded in 1842, the New York Philharmonic is one of America's leading orchestras, popularly referred to as the "Big Five". Its record-setting 14,000th concert was performed in December 2004.

The concert was the second time the orchestra has performed in Jiading, said Matthew VanBesien, current president of the orchestra. VanBesien spoke highly of Jiading's cultural environment and the locals' enthusiasm for the concert and hoped more people would fall in love with the symphony.

Throughout the two-hour concert, many famous pieces of music including "The Overtures to Fidelio" were performed and were greeted with thunderous and sustained applause.

"It's really a remarkable experience to enjoy such a wonderful concert," said Tao, a local resident who missed last year's concert held in Jiading.

Many more locals gave their thumbs-up to the concert, saying the tickets were affordable and the performances were extraordinary.

Since its opening in 2014, the Shanghai Poly Grand Theater has dedicated itself to becoming a first-rate theater, bringing in world-class performers and performances for local resididents, said Qin Tiji, chairman of the theater.

Though the ticket proceeds failed to cover the costs of the concert, Qin said the theater would spare no expense in trying to provide greater musical opportunities for local Jiading residents.
