Anting provides platform for grassroots stars

A talent show to look for grassroots stars concluded on Nov 15 in Anting town of Jiading district, where the Shanghai International Automobile City is located.

The event has been held for five consecutive years and attracted a total of 4,000 people. It aimed to help local residents who have talents in performance realize their star dreams.

This year, the event got more than 300 groups of participants including retired workers, white collars, people working in building construction and students. After five months' competition, 10 groups of performers stood out and got the qualification for the final contest.

Based on the strict evaluation by a panel of experts, public judges and votes through Wechat, the top three winners were announced. Zhang Lei, the third-prize winner, is a migrating worker from Henan province. Zhang said that he likes singing and learned singing on his own, and this talent show gave him an opportunity to show himself on the stage.

Over the past five years, the event had held over 70 contests and 20 tour performances with a participation of over 20,000 people. It discovered nearly 100 grassroots stars who established a cultural organization to enrich local residents' cultural life by offering them excellent performances. Due to its continuous efforts and popularity among the local people, the event received the recognition as an innovation program of public culture in Shanghai.
