Better Kitchen waste handling

A new type of waste treatment machine that can environmentally decompose kitchen waste has recently been launched in canteens in Jiangqiao town, Jiading district.

Left-over food, fruit skin and other kitchen waste can be discarded into the machine. Within 24 hours, with the right temperature and humidity, it will be decomposed by microbial bacteria. About 95 percent of the waste can be transformed into water, condensed organic fertilizer and carbon dioxide.

Compared with traditional waste treatment methods, such as burning and landfill, it is environmentally friendly and economically efficient, especially in densely populated cities.

The machine, developed by Shanghai ECO environmental technology company, can treat 50, 100 and 250 kilograms of kitchen waste daily, depending on the size. The tiniest size for household use can treat about 1.5 kilogram per day.

There is no odor during the decomposition, thanks to the new AdvCompTM technology developed by the company.

Shanghai has more than 30,000 garbage dumps, which handle about 2 tons of waste per day. About 50 to 60 percent of the total is kitchen waste. Municipal government said earlier that based on 2011 levels it plans to reduce the per-capita amount of rubbish that needs to be processed by 50 percent by 2020.
