A three-month exhibition for the traditional Tibetan Thangka will open in Jiading Museum, Shanghai, on Jan 12.
Thangka is a traditional Tibetan painting on cotton or silk. With wide-ranging themes including religious culture, popular customs, natural phenomenon, astrology and calendar, Thangka enjoys a reputation as a "Tibetan Encyclopedia".
The exhibition will display 85 Thangkas, offering visitors an opportunity to appreciate the paintings and learn about the profound Tibetan culture.
Apart from the exhibition, the museum will also hold other activities. Zhang Jiangwei, an expert from the Shanghai Museum, will give a lecture on Thangka from the Xigaze area on Jan 17. The museum will launch a hands-on activity for children to paint Thangkas themselves every Saturday during the exhibition.
