The first 24-hour smart library started trial operation in Nanxiang town, northwest Shanghai's Jiading district, on Jan 1, to provide automatic book lending and returning services to local people.
The library, covering an area of 15 square meters, can hold over 400 books. The machine in the library combines the function of book searching, lending, returning and renewal. Since the library is aimed at young white-collar workers, its books mainly include novels and fashion and lifestyle topics. It will add new books to meet the needs of the people. Mr Zhang, a local citizen, spent only five minutes to borrow two books in the library. "It is more convenient and time-saving than borrowing in the traditional library," he said.
