Jiading district of Shanghai recently released a report on local private museums. According to statistics, there are a total of 25 private museums in the district, 15 of which are open to the public. Six museums open to visitors require a reservation, and the other four are under construction.
The abundant exhibits at the private museums are popular with local residents. Take the Shanghai Zhuyun Art Museum as an example. It collects over 300 Jiading-related paintings, calligraphy and bamboo cutting art works. "Exhibits in the private museums are special, different from traditional museums," said Gu Hongbin, a resident from Jiangqiao town.
The private museums also show flexibility in operation and financing. Some of them depend on themselves while others gain financial support from the government.
Though private museums enjoyed fast development, most of them are still in the start-up stage and face difficulties in capital and management. The district is going to provide favorable policies to encourage the future development of private museums.
