The 2014 Jiading • Baoshan reading event kicked off at Jiading Library on May 25 in Shanghai’s Jiading district.
Lin Jun, member of Jiading’s Party committee, gave the welcoming address, and Wang Peihua, deputy director of Baoshan district’s publicity department, provided details about the event.
It is the sixth time Jiading and Baoshan are co-organizing the event, and there will be hundreds of activities related to reading this year. With the aim of engaging locals in experiencing culture and knowledge, the variety of activities include readings, exhibitions, lectures and videos.
Also on May 25, the Jiading branch of Chinese Braille Library and Yuanxiang Book Club were established.
Supported by the head office, the branch library will provide a full range of digital and audio resources for blind readers.
Yuanxiang Book Club is a non-profit group organized by Jiading Library, with an all-volunteer staff to help promote culture. It will regularly organize activities such as salons and lectures.
Wang Yonghao, professor of Chinese language at Fudan University, also gave a lecture at the opening ceremony, on wisdom and enlightenment of Confucius' thoughts.
