Yantai is the birthplace of China's first wine estate, Changyu Pioneer Wine Co, which was founded by diplomat Zhang Bishi in 1892.
With a history of more than 100 years, Changyu has developed into the largest wine producer in Asia and the fourth largest in the world.
It has become a model for the research and development of seedlings, grape growing, wine production and sales, grape estate tourism and the promotion of wine culture.
The group now has more than 16,000 hectares of grape plantations and bought six overseas chateaus, including Chateau Liversan in France and Australian wine producer Kilikanoon Wines Pty Ltd. Its products are sold to more than 70 countries.
In recent years, the company has been looking to support its overseas expansion by expanding its network of wineries in other countries. It has spent millions buying up vineyards abroad, making acquisitions in France, Spain and Chile.
As the largest wine production base in China, Yantai has held its international wine expo every year since 2007, which enjoys widespread popularity in the industry at home and abroad.
