Weihai, a picturesque city in the eastern tip of Shandong Peninsula, is located at 36°41′~37°35′N and121°11′~122°42′E. Bounded on three sides by the Yellow Sea, Weihai looks out to Liaodong Peninsula in its north, Korean Peninsula in its east and the islands of Japan in its southeast. The total area is 5, 436 square kilometers, including731 square kilometers of urban area. The coastline is 985.9 kilometers long.
The prefecture-level city of Weihai administers three county-level cities (Rongcheng City, Wendeng City, Rushan City) and four districts (Huancui District, National Torch Hi-tech Industrial Development Zone, National Economic and Technical Development Zone and National Free Trade Import and Export Processing Zone). Weihai has a total population of 2.45 million, among which urban population is 0.55 million.
Being one of the open coastal cities, Weihai is a famous port and tourist city in China. It is the first “National Sanitary City” and one of the first group of National Environmental Protection Model Cities. It is one of the forty cities of Excellent Hard Investment Environment and one of the fifty cites of strong comprehensive economic power. In May 2009, Weihai has been titled “National Forest City” (only 14 in China). In 2003, it won “World Habitat Awards” for their “outstanding contribution in improving habitats and city environment”.
