IOCAS was established in August 1950, and it has become a major multidisciplinary research and development institute in marine sciences in China.
IOCAS is one of the organizations for strategic test on national intellectual property authorized by the State Intellectual Property Office of China (SIPO). IOCAS is also a main center for graduate education and training in marine sciences in China. It offers Ph. .D. degree in 10 research fields and M.S. degree in 12 research fields. It also provides post-doctoral research opportunities in marine sciences. IOCAS currently has 600 employees and 400 are research staff, including 200 senior scientists. Among the research scientists, there are four academicians of the Chinese Academy of Science (CAS) and two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Engineering (CAE), and 107 Ph.D. supervisors.
Since its establishment, IOCAS has focused its research on the nation’s needs and frontiers in ocean sciences. Major research areas include basic research and technology development on environmental-friendly, high quality and efficiency, and sustainable marine aquaculture; the dynamics and processes of marine environment and marine ecosystem; ocean circulation, wave dynamics and processes in marginal seas; and geological evolution of continental margins and its impact on the environment and natural resources. In the last 50 years, more than 800 creative and innovative achievements were fulfilled. Among these, 10 were recognized by the international organizations, 5 received first-level and 9 second-level national awards, 14 were awarded by National Scientific Conference, and 101 were awarded by different Ministries and local governments. We are proud that IOCAS has made great contributions to the nation’s development in economy, defense, science and technology, and many other sectors.
Developed over the course of more than 50 years by generations of devoted and diligent scientists, the Institute of Ocean logy of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) has become a center of discovery and innovation in oceanography. IOCAS has made a number of fundamental advancements in both academic research and industrial application, including opening up new research fields, vindicating marine regulations for the benefit of our country, exploring marine resources, preventing natural marine disasters, protecting marine ecological systems and environments, developing sustainable marine economy, and advancing social civilization.
Since modern times, IOCAS has consistently made great progress in both discovery and innovation when called on by the CAS. Being proud of the achievements made in the past, IOCAS will consistently and compellingly advance with even greater leaps and bounds in the future. The myriad possibilities of the future call for every scientist and technologist to both work harder to meet the demands from the country for strategic preparation and frontier scientific research, as well as promote IOCAS into an international first-class institute for marine science research, an education/training center for young and gifted professionals, and an industrial base for China’s high sci-tech R&D. In order to explore with curiosity, progress with enthusiasm, and create with inspiration, all employees of IOCAS will promote themselves with a high capacity to discover and innovate in a work environment conducive to attracting elite scientists and technologists. Setting sail for a long voyage over beautiful and broad but often stormy and severe oceans, we are determined to achieve our goals of success for tomorrow.
