Updated: 2018-11-16 14:32

Moragahakanda Reservoir head works project (Project M Dam) is the largest hydro-junction project in Sri Lanka. The integrated project has been praised for being similar to Chinese-style "Diverting Water from the South to the North" project. The reservoir has a water storage capacity of 570,000,000 cubic meters and an installation capacity of 25 megawatt.

Construction started in July 2012. All four generation units began operating on Dec 4, 2017, creating large social and economic benefits. The project is helping Sri Lanka address issues such as the imbalance of water resources, flooding, and waterlogging problems.
