After two years' renovation, Jiangdong Water Treatment Plant in Ningbo is ready to supply local residents with "healthy water," which is filtered by 0.03 micron membrane filter, much smaller than the diameter of a piece of hair.

The installation and testing of the new equipment were completed yesterday, which means that the plant will be able to produce water of 200,000 tons a day.

With a history of 60 years, the plant experienced three expansions, which enabled its daily capacity of tap water production to reach 350,000 tons.

With an investment of 180 million yuan (US$27.5 million), the major municipal project kicked off in December 2013. The newly built facility covers an area of over 2,130 square meters with 24 huge membrane filtration pools. Each pool contains 36 filters. Thanks to the super fine filters, bacteria, virus and other materials in water will be filtered out. Meanwhile, real-time monitoring systems are installed to ensure the water quality and safety of drinking water.

The city will have another new water plant – Taoyuan Water Treatment Plant – to be built soon, which will adopt the same filtration technology to produce 500,000 tons of tap water a day.
